Arnulf Rainer’s drawings – and his prints – are autonomous works, but they are also a rich source for his paintings. Every imaginable possibility is investigated. Sometimes, in part because of its larger format, a painting has a different dynamic and requires a different working method, but it is not hard to see that the handwriting that expresses itself in his early drawings is still present in even his most recent paintings.

Rudi Fuchs and Maarten Bertheux have created an exhibition which guides us through the development of Arnulf Rainer’s visual handwriting. Before our eyes unfolds a banderole of images, in a rhythm like a musical composition.
