by J. & L. Lobmeyr – Arnulf Rainer ‘Anfang’
How sacrosanct is an icon? Thirteen contemporary artists take this question on. An initiative of the MAK ART Society (MARS) asked them to interpret the glass from Drinking Set No.248 by Adolf Loos. This has been in production since 1931 by the Viennese glass company J. & L. Lobmeyr. The glasses have a fine, polished brilliant pattern on the base. In their provocative and uncomplicated perfection the service exemplifies the creative radicalism of Adolf Loos, Austria's most important trailblazer for modern architecture.
Arnulf Rainer also received the honour of designing one of the glasses – and he chose the ‘Anfang’ writing from the exhibition of the same name, at the Arnulf Rainer Museum in 2009. “For me, the glass is a canvas,” Rainer says, describing his creative approach.
